The first meeting of the Stourbridge Primary Schools’ Football Association was held on Wednesday 30th September 1953 at Hill Street Junior School canteen [the old Greenfield Primary School] with Mr. H. S. Beresford in the chair. Those present were Mr. Holmes [Oldswinford]; Mr. Smith [Stambermill]; Mrs. Lewis [Orchard Lane] and Mr. Higgins [Enville Street]. At the end of the first season, 1953/1954, it is interesting to note that the chairman stated ‘that although he had been suspicious of football league among Juniors he had been favourably impressed by the spirit in which it had been played’. Wollaston C. E. Junior School were the first League Winners and holders of the Shield donated by a Mr. Coulson. The Records of the Association’s activities from 1955 to 1963 unfortunately have been lost. Affiliation fees for the 1970/1971 season were 10/6p. per school. The Knockout Cup Competition [known as the P. R. Guinness Trophy] was first competed for during the season 1970/1971 with Wollaston C. E. Junior School taking the Cup Winners Title. [Records of the Roll of Honour for this competition date from season 1970/71 to season 1994/95] The 5-a-side Tournament was introduced to the season’s programme during 1975/76. The first winner of the 5-a-side Tournament was Hob Green. The last 5-a-side competition was won by Wollescote in 1991. The 5-a-side Tournament was re-installed in 2004/05 with Greenfield taking the honours. The Association had just one league until 1975/76 when the two league system was adopted. This was to allow smaller schools to compete with smaller schools and larger schools to compete with larger. It also meant that the leagues were smaller [6 per league] and schools were able to complete their fixtures before Christmas whilst having the opportunity of playing a number of friendly matches as well. A record of The League Roll of Honour is only known between the seasons 1963/64 to 1978/79 and seasons 1985/86 to 1989/90 [The League shields are currently mislaid. When these are found a record of winners from 1990 onwards {hopefully engraved upon them} can be updated]. The Association revised the leagues for the season 1987/88 when 8-a-side leagues were adopted to revitalise interest in the Association’s activities. 8-a-side leagues meant that schools had fewer children to transport, were easier to referee {with no offside} and the length of each match was shorter to accommodate games played in the winter months. Over the seasons The Chair of the Association was a duly elected Head Teacher of one of the Stourbridge Schools. This tradition was kept alive until Mr. Dave Cooper, Head of Beauty Bank, retired {Chair from 1980 to1995}. Without a Head Teacher figure head to fill the Chair the Association began to falter. The then Teacher i/c of football at Beauty Bank continued to co-ordinate the Association’s activities but interest and commitment to the Association began to further deteriorate when Miss Mooney moved out of the Stourbridge area [a sign that teachers at this time {late 1990’s} were unable to commit their time to after school football activities]. The Leagues faltered and the Cup ceased to run with only a few committed teachers organising games during the early seasons of the new millennium. After two seasons with incomplete league fixtures and no Cup Competitions, a group of interested parties met during the summer of 2004, at Red Hill Secondary School, to discuss ways of re-launching the Association’s League and Cup activities. An agreement was reached to re-launch the Stourbridge Primary School’s Football Association for the season 2004 / 2005 under the stewardship of Mr. J. M. Tromans [Deputy Head, Oldswinford C. E. Primary School, Stourbridge]. Twelve schools in the Stourbridge area responded to the re-launch and the SPSFA under 11 League was once again up and running with a full season’s fixtures in its 51st Season. Mr J. M. Tromans continued to run the leagues until his retirement in the summer of 2008. |
